Global body ranks journal first in Nigeria

A journal, Ianna Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies, has been ranked number one in Nigeria in the Scimago journal ranking.

Ianna Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies was established by a lecturer in the Department of Mass Communication, University of Nigeria Nsukka, Dr Celestine Gever.

Scimago journal ranking includes information on the scientific indicators of journals developed from information based on  Scopus database. The indicators can be utilised to evaluate journals’ scientific performance and prestige. Journals can be categorised based on subject area, subject category, or country.

Gever said to be considered for ranking in Scimago, a journal must first be indexed in the Scopus database.

According to the data,  Ianna Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies has a Scimago Journal Rank indicator score of 0.374 to lead the list of 23 ranked journals in Nigeria. The second journal on the list is the Pan African Medica Journal, with an SJR indicator score of 0.323.

The Nigerian Postgraduate Medical Journal came third with an SJR indicator of 0.307. The African Journal of Reproductive Health (SJR, 0.282) and the Nigerian Journal of Clinical Practice (SRJ, 0.270) ranked 4th and 5th respectively.

A statement by the scholar, read, “SJR indicator is a measure of the prestige of a scholarly journal that takes into account both the citations the journal receives and the prestige of such journals from which the citations came. When compared globally, the Ianna Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies ranked 46 out of 171 multidisciplinary journals, a category under which it is grouped in Scimago.

“In the area of quartile ranking, Ianna Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies was ranked as quartile 2 (Q2), Pan African Medica Journal, Postgraduate Medical Journal, African Journal of Reproductive Health and   Nigerian Journal of Clinical Practice were ranked as Q3. However, Ikenga Journal was ranked as Q1, but its low SJR indicator score of 0.187 placed it as the No. 8th journal in Nigeria on the list.

“A look at the list showed that journals in the sciences dominated it, with 15 out of the 23 journals being from either medical sciences or natural sciences. To access the list, readers can visit www.scimagojr.com, select journal ranking, and then select Nigeria as the country in the space for country or regions.”
